Tunnel Boring

Tunnels are certainly one of engineering's great achievements. Early construction methods consisted of manual labor, which meant it took years to complete a project. With the invention of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), time was substantially reduced and the caliber of these projects has advanced to build the latest state-of-the-art tunnels worldwide.

Messinger has manufactured some of the larger bearings (up to 178" O.D.) found on the business end of TBMs. Messinger's history of manufacturing and repairing these bearings dates back to the early 1960s. Before then, not all manufacturers could accommodate the refurbishing of such large bearings, and many had to be sent overseas which was costly and time-consuming. Messinger is keeping pace with the needs of this industry, by assisting our customers with replacement or refurbishment of these and even larger bearings.
